On 25th October 2025 our Zara had her first litter.

Follow along as they grow. They develop and change so quickly. Hopefully with this thread you can see what its like to have kittens grow up before your eyes.

She had 7!

On day 65 the gorgeous Zara had her babies. She is being an incredible mum. The first few days she was very protective and quite unsettled. I didnt pick up her babies much apart from changing the bedding. She has a lovely rainbow litter including reds, torties, black smoke and brown tabby.

She loves her babies. You can tell as she pulls them towards her and encourage them to suckle. She purrs and paddles like these babies are the best in the world and for her they are. Shes staying very close to the babies and only leaves the bed to quickly eat or use the toilet.

Maine coon kittens – Week 1

Babies are getting bigger. Zara has them all sorted and they have fat bellys. When she is out of the bed they sleep contentedly. She is more settled now and she calls to me for breakfast in the morning. We have her on some high quality food so that helps with her milk and hopefully will lesson the weight loss that can happen with some of the larger litters.

I am able to handle them a bit more now but still keep them close to Zara so she doesnt fret. I tell her she is so clever and she gives me head butts back. I am so fortunate that the mums allow me to help at birthing and handle their babies. Its such a trust.

They are starting to move around more. The can only just life their bellys off the ground to move. They lift their heads and look around . They are very wobby.

Eyes open

Just a quick pic to show the eyes starting to open. This usually starts to happen around 10 days old and it takes about 2 days for them to open completely. Their vision is quite blurry but will become better as they grow. When their eyes open they become like little people. Start to gain their personalities about bit more.

Maine coon kittens – Week 2

Eyes open heads up and moving much better. Not all the way up on their feet at all but definately getting mobile. Starting to take the world in and they have started with sounds – small meows and a bit of hissing. I suppose I look strange with their blurry eye but they recognise my voice. They are moving around a lot more now. They are climbing all over each other and creating kitty piles.

As you can see by the pics their heads are round and their colours are coming through more and more. They change so quickly. Daily they are learning to do different things.

Maine coon kittens – Week 3

We have grown! You can see the difference in how much room they take up in the bed.

Less time sleeping – more time with open eyes. They are moving around a lot more. Not always successfully as they are still very wobbly but trying none the less. Their fur is starting to get a bit of length to it and they are starting to look like little kittens rather than just colourful blobs. They have worked out that there are more than just them in the bed. They are starting to reach out to their siblings.

Maine coon kittens – Week 4

And we are OUT!!!

They are getting control of their bodies and getting out of the bed is a milestone. This is the gateway to finding food and using the litter tray. You can see determination in every wobbly step to get where they want to go. As they get stronger and more coordinated we will start to play and interact with the environment around them.

A lot of time is spent loving on them. Patting and picking up – everyone gets a turn! They are so sweet and everything around them is facinating and they are beginning to learning people are where the cuddles and belly rubs come from.

Maine Coon kittens – Week 5

Bigger and bigger they are getting. They are very confident now in their walking. They are a lot less wobbly and not so much falling over their feet. They are taking in their world and finding lots of things to examine.

Maine Coon kittens – Week 6

You can see how much they have grown and changed from when I was born.

Babies are really getting interesting now. They are looking to playing and interacting with each other. They act so grown up and doing grown up things but in little packages.

They are also playing follow the leader! What you are doing Im going to do too. This has helped a great deal when they are learning to eat and drink. Their use of the litter tray is coming along nicely too. Many of them have deposits now.

They have 2 speeds – flat out and then flat out! Toys are becoming very interesting. Suddenly they are jumping and pouncing – running still needs some work.
