Are you ready for a Maine Coon?

The breed. Do you know all about Maine Coons??  You may be drawn to this breeds large size and striking looks to start out with but once you get to know a Maine Coon – its their personality that will have you hooked. There is so much to love about this breed. Maine Coons continue to work their way into many hearts and families across the world.

Can you afford A Maine Coon?

Can you afford a Maine Coon? Apart from the purchase price you must think about other things that will be an ongoing cost.

Premium food is one such cost. Maine Coons need a premium diet especially when they are growing. They also need good quality food for their eventual size and activity level.

Litter

Of course litter is a factor too.  Maine Coons will need a larger tray which means more litter. Depending on what type of litter and tray you use will depend on how much you use.  Our cats and kittens use Kitter Litter and a 2 tray system.  Fullofcharm kittens are trained to use this type from a young age.  Scooping at least once a day is the least that is required to keep up good toilet habits.

Toys

And then there is the fun stuff!  Toys.  Maine coons is an inquisitive breed that likes to have things that stretch their mind and keep them entertained.  Its true that you don’t have to buy elaborate expensive toys all the time. Even a screwed-up paper or a toilet roll middle will keep them occupied for ages. But there will be a time that you want to give them a super dooper toy!

As well as toys its is advised that cat furniture, such as a scratching post.  The thing to know about scratching posts for Coonies is that they need larger than normal ledges and boxes.  The post also needs to be stable. Stable enough to cope with Coonies running flat out and jumping on them.

Grooming

Grooming.  Coonies need help grooming to keep their coat in tip top shape. This is especially relevant when the seasons change from winter to summer.  With the grooming comes tools to do it.  Combs and brushes and may be even clippers will be required.

Vet expenses

Vet expenses.  There will of course be a time that you have to take your beautiful Maine Coon to the vet.  Especially in the first year when there are extra vaccinations to be done etc.  My kittens go to there new owners already desexed and microchipped so those are not expenses that will need to be covered.  Pet insurance is something that should be seriously considered. If not pet insurance then a separate account to keep some funds on hand for “just in case”. Our pet kittens go home with 30 days free pet insurance that is activated on the day they leave.

Carrier

Cat carrier needs to be larger than normal as your kitten will GROW!  Make sure it has plenty of breathing holes and is sturdy.  The last thing you want is to have it come apart when you are transporting your baby.  Screws that join the 2 parts together is recommended over clips.

Do you have Time?

One thing that is not monetary based is time.  Coonies are not the type of cat that just sits up on the scratching post and comes around for dinner.  Maine Coons love their humans and want to be involved in family life. They love to explore all that is happening.  Coonies need time for affection, cuddling and playtime with you.  Giving your Maine Coon the attention they need will make them a happy, confident and affectionate little being.
