One myth is that the origins of the breed was that it came from matings between semi-wild domestic cat and raccoons – thus Maine Coons! Their bushy tail and brown tabby colouring has bolstered this belief. This is of course genetically impossible but it’s a good story.
Maine Coons have been known to be in cat shows across the USA as far back as 1860. They were very popular and won many awards. For a while Maine Coons slipped into obscurity but it renewed popularity again by the 1960’s. In the 1980’s Maine Coons were exported to Europe where they quickly gained recognition from the European associations.
The intelligence, affection, charm, independent, beauty and size make Maine Coons magnificent felines and truly one of a kind breed.
The Maine Coon is best suited for an owner who wants a lot of cat in every sense of the word.
